Much has been speculated about what this book is about. I have been looking for a copy for several years and finally found one. After reading it the first time, I was a little sad and a little confused. As an adult , I see it as a book for adults, but I'm not sure if it really isn't a book for children after all. It reads like a simple mystery, a little scary and a little dark. I know from reading about Margaret, that she was interested in writing for adults and that this book was probably an allegory for how creativity played a part in her life and in the lives of those that she loved. the story is simple, a boy enters the forbidden dark woods in search of the song of the Golden Birds, Those that have gone before have been driven mad or to the point to silence by their journey, but he goes with a pure heart, and not for himself, but for the old man that he loves and to heal him from the madness . Like I said, it's Dark. Maybe Margaret is the Boy, she said herself in a summary of the book that the boy was "the artist". Maybe it is just the story of the artists struggle with inspiration and the creative muse. Maybe not ~ *
