Probably the reason Random House shortened it, was because of the dated language- "It is nighttime, and the fathers are coming home..." also they left out Bears and Fish. They also took out some of MWB language that is discriptive of sounds. I'm not sure why this is done, and I have noticed it in several of the later editions of her stories. It's too bad, I thnk is one the the charming things about her writing. *
